Technicians do not diagnose openers by staring at them. They split the system: does it have power, does it hear commands, can it move the door? Each question has a test you can run from the garage floor, and the pattern of answers names the failure.
Test 1: the light (power)
Press the wall button and watch the opener’s work light.
- Light comes on or the motor hums: power is fine, move to test 3.
- Nothing at all: power problem. Check the ceiling outlet with a phone charger or lamp, then the GFCI and breaker. DeKalb garages wired in the 1970s and 80s often daisy-chain the opener outlet off a GFCI near the service door, and one damp week trips it. If the outlet is live and the opener is still dark, its power supply or logic board has died, and that is a repair-or-replace conversation worth having with real numbers.
Test 2: wall button versus remote (radio)
If the wall button works but remotes and the keypad do not, the motor and mechanics are innocent. You have a radio problem, and radio problems are the cheapest category on the list.
- Batteries first, and not just the newest remote. Keypad membranes hide their battery behind the pad; most take a 9-volt.
- Reprogram before replacing. A power blink can wipe an opener’s code memory, taking every remote with it at once, which looks dramatic and fixes in five minutes with the learn button.
- All remotes weak or short-range: interference happens, but a failing receiver board is likelier on units past year ten. Add-on universal receivers are an inexpensive workaround we install routinely.
If nothing responds, wall button included, but the opener has power (its light works from the pull chain or blinks), the wall console or its low-voltage wire may have failed; staples through that thin wire during a garage shelving project are a classic.
Test 3: the release cord (mechanics)
Pull the red release cord with the door fully closed, then lift the door by hand.
- The door lifts smoothly and stays put at half height, but the opener cannot move it: the opener’s drive is the problem. A hum with no motion is the stripped main gear, the signature failure of older chain-drive units; a grind is the same gear mid-death. Gear kits are a standard repair on common brands.
- The door is heavy, will not stay at half height, or takes real strength to lift: stop. The opener was never the problem. Your springs have quit, the opener has been straining against deadweight, and continuing to run it finishes off the drive gear. This exact sequence, spring fails quietly, opener dies loudly a week later, sends us more openers than old age does.

Batteries, reprogramming, GFCI resets, and the release-cord latch are homeowner territory, no argument from us.
